How can 8 years feel like yesterday?

8 Years ago today my Granddad lost his fight with cancer. I cant believe it has been that long, I can still see, hear and feel everything I felt that day as if it happened yesterday. I still miss him and time doesn't heal all. We shared the same birthday and its going to be especially tough this year as I'm turning 30. I still expect to hear his voice at the end of the phone on that day so we can sing Happy Birthday to each other.
